France will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel after UK pressure
French officials have consented to start intercepting small boats in the English Channel, following months of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy comes after the British leader wrote to the President asking him to support the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the migrant vessels at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French police have infrequently acted to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as excessively high a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is essential that we deploy these methods this period... We have no effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says personnel will begin intervening at sea, with the objective of safeguarding human life.
Notably, the official excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential technique to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a major step forward, following a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former Interior Minister left office.
That was highlighted in July, in the run-up to a meeting between the Prime Minister and French president, when French police were observed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to stop boats before they collect migrant passengers from the coastal areas of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adjust to avoid detection, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and the Prime Minister's office have been approached for comment.
