The buzz around the recent awards show was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction implies that the team is likely building a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it kicked off the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.
While numerous modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, letting players to find creative solutions throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, sometimes in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
