Uche Sparks Straightforward Palace Victory at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European adventure, Crystal Palace are adapting at a rapid pace. Missing key figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a comfortable result that all but secures them a spot in the Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS ought to be sufficient to secure direct entry to the knockout stages, particularly following a prior setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Seize the Opportunity
This match provided a chance for some of Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, in only his second start since arriving on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second game in match.
The Shelbourne team that had finished their domestic season were no match even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Dominance Established from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A flowing move in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee dismissed the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to find his goal, tapping home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to escape a booking for two agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Wraps Up the Game
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before coolly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
After the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to withdraw several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt crash off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for improvement in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the visiting side.
